If you're wondering how to prepare for a boudoir session, there's a good chance you've already started making a mental checklist. Maybe you're wondering what to wear. Maybe you're thinking about losing weight first. Maybe you're questioning whether you're even the "kind of person" who does something like this. If that's you, hi. I see you. I want to tell you the one thing I hope every person hears before they book a boudoir session: You don't have to become someone else in order to be celebrated.

Preparing for boudoir isn’t about becoming a different person. It’s about understanding what the experience will feel like, trusting the process, and giving yourself permission to show up. And honestly? That’s part of the magic, and why I’ve created every part of the Head to Curve experience with intention — from wardrobe guidance and posing direction to making sure you know exactly what to expect before you ever step into the studio. Your only job is to show up ❤️

You Don’t Have to Love Every Inch of Yourself First

Let’s talk about one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding boudoir: You have to already feel confident before you book. Friend… hard pass 😂 Confidence is not a prerequisite for being photographed. You do not need to lose weight first. You do not need to tone up first. You do not need to become some future, “better” version of yourself before you deserve to celebrate the person you are right now. Bodies change. Seasons of life change. Our relationships with ourselves change. That doesn’t mean you have to wait to be seen. At Head to Curve, boudoir isn’t about creating a version of you that doesn’t exist. It’s about documenting the version of you that is already here.

You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose

One of the most common things I hear before a session is: “I have no idea how to pose.” Perfect, that's my job 😂 You do not need to practice in front of the mirror, memorize Pinterest poses, or suddenly become a professional model overnight. During your session, I’ll guide you through everything—from where to put your hands, how to move your body, where to look, and how to create images that feel natural and authentic to you. You’re not expected to show up knowing what you’re doing. You’re expected to show up willing to trust the process. And I promise, we’ll have a lot of fun along the way.

You Don’t Have to Figure Out the Wardrobe Alone

Let’s talk about another big one: “What am I even supposed to wear?” First of all, woosah. You do not need to show up with a suitcase full of lingerie or spend hundreds of dollars buying outfits you may never wear again. That’s exactly why the Head to Curve Client Closet exists. With sizes ranging from Small through 6X, the Curve Closet was created to make wardrobe planning one less thing you have to worry about. Whether you want something romantic, bold, playful, classic, or a little spicy, we’ll work together to find pieces that feel like you. You’re also always welcome to bring outfits from home. Sometimes having another set of eyes makes all the difference. The goal isn’t to put you in something that photographs well but doesn’t feel authentic. The goal is for you to look in the mirror and think: “Damn. That’s me.”

Prepare for Your Experience, Not a Transformation

While you don’t need to change anything about yourself before your session, there are little things you can do to make the experience feel extra special. Think of these less as requirements and more as reminders that you deserve care. Book the nail appointment. Buy the lingerie that’s been sitting in your cart. Schedule a hair appointment if that makes you feel amazing. Plan a post-session lunch or coffee date to celebrate yourself afterward. You are the main character. Act accordingly 😉

Small Ways to Care for Yourself Before Your Session

Your body is about to do some things it might not do every day. There will be arching, stretching, bending, twisting, and holding positions that create those gorgeous images you’ll love. A little preparation can help you feel more comfortable:

  • Get a good night’s sleep.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat nourishing meals.
  • Do some gentle stretching.

If you’d like some simple stretches to help you feel more comfortable moving through your session, I put together a guide you can check out here. And please hear me when I say this: do not crash diet, “detox,” or punish your body before your session. We are not here to celebrate some imaginary future version of you. We are here to celebrate you. Exactly as you are.

Wear Something Comfortable to the Studio

This is a simple one, but it makes a huge difference: Wear something loose and comfortable when you arrive. Think sweatpants, oversized shirts, cozy layers, and yes… ditching the bra is encouraged😉 We want your skin feeling comfortable and free from deep clothing lines before we start creating magic. Plus, who doesn’t love arriving in their comfiest outfit?

Trust the Process

The biggest thing I want you to do before your Head to Curve boudoir session? Trust me. That’s why every client receives a Welcome Guide before their session. It’s your roadmap to what you can expect, what to bring, and how we’ll spend our time together. You don’t have to walk into the studio knowing exactly what happens next. You don’t have to carry the pressure of making the experience perfect. That’s what I’m here for. Your job is to arrive. My job is to guide you. Together, we’ll create something that feels like you.

This Could Be Your Story Too

If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to book a boudoir session, maybe this is your sign? Not because you suddenly need to become more confident. Not because you need to change your body. Not because you need to become someone else. Because you are already worthy of being celebrated. Whether you’re local to Grand Rapids or traveling from farther away, Head to Curve is here to create a boudoir experience rooted in care, connection, and genuine celebration. If you’ve been looking for a boudoir photographer who will see you, support you, and hype you the hell up every step of the way, I’d love to create this experience with you!
